FRANCIS: Why are you always on about women, Stan?

STAN: I want to be one.

REG: What?

STAN: I want to be a woman. From now on, I want you all to call me ‘Loretta’.

REG: What?!

LORETTA: It’s my right as a man.

JUDITH: Well, why do you want to be Loretta, Stan?

LORETTA: I want to have babies.

REG: You want to have babies?!

LORETTA: It’s every man’s right to have babies if he wants them.

REG: But… you can’t have babies.

LORETTA: Don’t you oppress me.

REG: I’m not oppressing you, Stan. You haven’t got a womb! — Where’s the foetus going to gestate?! You going to keep it in a box?!

JUDITH: Here! I- I’ve got an idea. Suppose you agree that he can’t actually have babies, not having a womb, which is nobody’s fault, not even the Romans’, but that he can have the right to have babies.

FRANCIS: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother. Sister. Sorry.

REG: What’s the point?

REG: What’s the point of fighting for his right to have babies when he can’t have babies?!

FRANCIS: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.

REG: It’s symbolic of his struggle against reality.

Many of you will recognise that scene from Monty Python’s ‘Life of Brian’. It was hilarious in 1979 (unless you were one of the Christians campaigning to have the film banned for blasphemy). The scene sends up left wing fringe groups by having them argue over asserting a right which, at the time, was considered ridiculous.

In 2017 it’s not fringe, ridiculous or funny. The government plans to introduce a Gender Recognition Bill to “de-medicalise” transgenderism. If you feel you ‘identify’ as the other sex, you’ll simple be able to write off and have your birth certificate changed – no need to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria and live as the other sex for at least two years, as currently is the case. You’ll then be legally the other sex, regardless of your biological sex or genitalia, and legally be able to enforce being described as your chosen sex. The proposed bill will go out for consultation, but only among the LGBT community.

Some have rightly expressed concern at how this will allow biological men to access women’s changing rooms, toilets and other facilities and compete against women in sports and that it is open to abuse.

My objection is more fundamental. This is an ideological denial of reality – that gender is non-binary, a social construct we are free to choose which has nothing to do with our bodies – and it’s backed-up with legal compulsion.

Gender is binary. There’s male and female. This is the basis of sexual reproduction. It applies to all but the simplest animals, along with much of the plant kingdom. This has been the case for over a billion years. Men have penises and testicles and tend be larger and more muscular. Women have vaginas and wombs and lactate. Males have XY chromosomes. Females XX. This is biological reality. It is not a social construct or something you choose as your identity.

There are people who are confused about their sex, those with rare medical conditions such as hermaphroditism and transvestites, who have been the butt of many jokes over the years. However a physical man who simply identifies as a woman (or vice versa) is not a real woman any more than, if he decided he identified as a squirrel or a lettuce, he would be those things. All these cases should be treated as a mental health issues, rather than the rest of us being compelled to go along with the delusion. Even a man who has undergone gender reassignment surgery, however good the results, is still a mutilated, reconstructed and medicated biological man (and vice versa).

This Bill is even more staggering as it is being proposed, not by Jeremy Corbyn’s loony left Labour Party, but by the supposed Conservative party. Even they have completely surrendered to the identity politics of the left. God forbid anyone might think of them as ‘the nasty party’. The legislation will of course will be waved through by all parties, despite it being a logical offence to many voters. At least UKIP to their credit denounced it.

I note that Justine Greening – the Secretary of State for Education, Minister for Women and Equalities – who is pushing this Bill, is herself a lesbian. Some readers may recall that in a recent article on this site I noted that at least three candidates for the UKIP leadership are gay or lesbian. This does not necessarily mean they support this legislation or the transgender agenda associated with it. I’d like to know their positions on it though.

Frankly this stuff petrifies me. I have an infant son who will be going to school in a few short years. Transgenderism is increasingly being promoted and ‘education’ about it being mandated even in primary schools. Campaigners are keen to identify transgender kids as young as possible, because it’s easier to start gender reassignment before puberty. How many children will be sucked into this, who are just going through a phase and do not understand the implications, to have their bodies mutilated and lives ruined, and will come to regret it in later life? This could be a tragedy on a huge scale. I’ve already heard talk of a class action by victims.

What is striking is how this transgender agenda has swept through in what seems like just a couple of years. The Cultural Marxist structures already in place are being swiftly utilised: the liberal media; influence over young people; celebrity virtue signalling; well (often publicly) funded pressure groups; political consensus; equalities legislation; corporate policies; hate speech laws and web censorship. Reason didn’t stand a chance. I can’t even go the cashpoint now without it cheerfully telling me the bank’s phasing out gender-specific pronouns. Soon we’ll be risking court if we don’t use gender neutral pronouns like “ze”.

As for Monty Python, they’ll probably cut that scene from future re-releases, like they rewrite children’s books to make them politically correct.
