“‘I’ll have you for assault’ – watch tensions on the steps of Shire Hall as People’s Vote protest is gate-crashed by pro-Brexit campaign
It’s all got a bit hot under the collar on the steps of Shire Hall this morning as People’s Vote campaigners and Brexit supporters verbally clashed.
A flag being waved in someone’s face even led to an accusation of assault as politically-charged tensions mounted ahead of today’s full Gloucestershire County Council meeting.
People’s Vote campaigners led by Liberal Democrat councillors were in a staring match with UKIP supporters demanding ‘Brexit means Brexit’ as both tried to get their arguments heard.
A motion has been tabled at the meeting by the council’s Lib Dem leader Councillor Paul Hodgkinson asking that the council back calls for a People’s Vote, including the option that the country remains a member of the EU.
Leigh Boobyer, Gloucestershire Live’s local democracy reporter, said one UKIP supporter stood among the People’s Vote campaigners attempting to stare them down while a loud-speaker bellowed recorded pro-Brexit quotes from Nigel Farage and chanted ‘who are you?’.
Footage also shows People’s Vote campaigners waving flags and jostling for prominent positions as a Brexiteer attempts to make a speech in Westgate Street.
Two men from opposing sides then have a brief, heated argument after a People’s Vote flag is waved in the face of a Brexit supporter, with the words ‘I’ll have you for assault’ heard.”
That video is a must-watch!
