UKIP fisheries spokesman, Mike Hookem MEP has branded the Brexit transition deal a ”total betrayal,” saying, ”for fishermen there will be no Brexit, as the Tories have handed the EU even more power over their industry.”
Mr Hookem’s comments came after it was announced in a joint EU/UK press conference that the fishing industry would continue to be regulated by the EU throughout the transition period, with Britain only able to ‘consult’ on fishing rule changes.
Speaking from Brussels, Mr Hookem said the deal ”was a worst case scenario for fishers and coastal communities.”
Mr Hookem continued: ”rather than regaining the fishing industry, as is our right under international law, May, Davis, and their weak cohorts have actually further weakened our ability to make policy in UK waters.”
”When the EU say they will allow consultation on fishing rules, we all know that means the UK will be totally ignored. It’s bad enough at the moment while we are still part of the EU!”
”The simple fact is, the Tories betrayed the fishing industry on the way into the EU, and totally shafted the same sector on the way out.”
”While I have no doubts that those earning millions in the city each year will be celebrating this deal, many struggling fishers will know that this deal could mean the end of the line for them and their communities.”

“Rule, Britannia! Britannia rule the waves…” ??
Er, sorry, pause for hollow laughter.
The fishing fleet has always been a source of men and experience for the Royal Navy.
This is not just a matter of interest for those involved in fishing.
It is a matter of National Security.
With this move, Napoleon’s ghost is getting his revenge for Trafalgar.
Are their any UKIP candidates for the local elections that are fishermen ?
If not, why not ?
As Emily quite rightly points out – they don’t even bother to vote for us.
Regards.
What a sell out!
Not just fishing either, according to the Telegraph, the vile woman has agreed to allow free movement over the transition period.
The EU will make sure there is a massive influx of people, probably mainly so called refugees: then somehow there’ll be another referendum. We’ll be totally disenfranchised in our own country, we’ll lose any remaining political influence we had left as a people.
If we allow Theresa May to get away with this, it’s game over for us.
And all those Tories and many in the fishing industry will go out and vote Tory again.
And again.
And again.
You can’t fight plain political bigotry and national suicide.
And May knows it.
That the British have sunk to this.
Please take note: Mike sent this statement from Brussels, right after Barnier and Davis ‘presented’ their ‘deal’.
No time to organise anything at all – but I’m sure he and FFL will work something out in the very near future.
