By-Election Results Announced

Eight councils held by-elections yesterday, and the first sets of results were announced late last night.

They all show strong gains for UKIP, with an increase in vote from a standing start of between 9.1% and 18.5%. In Barnsley, UKIP came a strong second, taking 23.2% of the votes. A national YouGov poll yesterday put us on 13%, clearly we are smashing this in certain areas.

Meanwhile, the other parties all suffered losses, with the Conservative vote dropping a mammoth 18.4% in West Lancashire.  Those voters seem to have converted evenly between Labour and UKIP, with both parties picking up just over 9% in that ward. Elsewhere however UKIP was taking votes from Labour, proof that our message that Miliband and co can’t be trusted to speak up for British interests is getting through.

The Liberal Democrats meanwhile seem to be sinking without a trace, coming seventh in Manchester behind the Pirate Party, and eighth in Glasgow with just 1.5% of the vote. Much of their parliamentary success comes from strong local support, so it remains to be seen whether they can hold on to many of their Westminster seats come 2015. The European elections will be interesting for them too, as Clegg has suffered a mysterious form of amnesia over his promise to hold an In Out referendum, and now proclaims that Britain must remain within the EU.

The only blip for UKIP was in Scotland on the Glasgow City Council, where UKIP finished fifth. The SNP came second here on 30.1% of the vote, so our Scotland branches do have more to contend with. However, there is no reason that UKIP shouldn’t appeal across Great Britain, as our message is one of British strength. UKIP Daily will be investigating what can be done to support our Scottish branches and report back here.

If we had a future vision for Britain as an United Kingdom we would do better in Scotland. The SNP do well because the UK has no national direction. A victory for the SNP in 2014 will leave the concept of UK busted. Even a “no” vote in the referendum will still leave a highly divided Scotland. A binding direction/vision outside of the EU for all Britons is needed. I’m surprised that UKIP doesn’t make more of this issue,In some ways Scotland offers a huge opportunity.
